Taplow Utd A 2 Bell
and Bottle 7
Gareth Greenaway Lyndon Dolby
Reading
League Division 4
29 Mar 2008
Bell and Bottle needed a win to seal the title. And, Pat Guerin aside, Taplow
Utd seemed to lack any belief that they could deny them that opportunity. So
only one result was really on the cards.
The visitors nonetheless looked nervous and and it took some hapless defending
and unusually poor concentration from the goalkeeper to grant Bell a lead they
hardly deserved and settle the nerves. A repeat of the situation put the
visitors at their ease, when the Taplow midfield only 20 minutes into the game
gave up the ghost providing no effective cover for their 'defence' and the
back four, ball-watching to man, rushed across the field like mini-soccer
players to leave the Bell's striker unmarked in front of Dean Hubbard.
From that point on Bell started easing off and Pat Guerin alone stood up to
the plate making tackle after tackle to compensate for the mistakes being made
around him. With no ball being held up front he was called into action
repeatedly but was unable to stop the next three comfortable goals.
The second half was a procession. Taplow threatened briefly in the
opening exchanges when their only good move of note a four pass sequence which
ended with Mark Pearson Hall crossing for Dale Bowden to run on to face an
exposed keeper. The outcome unfortunately was a poorly skewed kick
toward the corner flag, characteristic of lack of concentration.
Bell attacked at will and further good work from Guerin and some smart saves
from Hubbard kept the visitors at bay long enough for Trevor Hilling to make
chase a punt down and gain a penalty as he was needlessly fouled in the area.
Gareth Greenaway slotted home coolly and subsequently contributed much more to
the game from midfield, giving Taplow a measure of hope. Bell were
getting behind the Taplow lines just as frequently but were misfiring until
another failure to close down a player in space allowed Bell to fire through a
muddle of 'defenders'. Lyndon Dolby snatched a further consolation
before Bell rounded off an easy victory and league winning celebrations could
commence, presumably in their own vehicles.
