Taplow United Football Club History

A longer history of the Club is to found at the link opposite.

Taplow United is the name registered with the Berks and Bucks C.F.A. for the Old Paludians. We registered as Taplow United in 1998 as part of our attempt to improve our profile in the local community.

The Old Paludians Association was formed in 1923 by former pupils of Slough Secondary School - re-named Slough Grammar School in 1936. It has provided post-school activities for former pupils ever since.

Mr. E. Rutland-Clarke, headmaster of the school in 1923 and founder member of the Club, helped in the naming of the association. The name derives from the Latin word ‘PALUS’ meaning marsh, bog or slough!

The original club colours were chocolate, but these were quickly changed in 1926 to sky blue shirts, navy shorts and amber socks. These were the original colours of the school. The current strip of maroon shirts, shorts and socks represents the present school colours.

Our present ground was acquired in 1955 and through the voluntary work of members a clubhouse was built, subsequently extended and is now being gradually modernised. The Club continues to provide a focus for present and former pupils of the school, but also welcomes others who show the same commitment to Club spirit and community.

The Club fields 4 teams on a Saturday and Sunday in senior football and has a thriving junior soccer section. The Saturday sides play in the Reading League. The Sunday teams play in the Observer Industrial League and the youngsters in the Slough Boys’ Combination. Ladies football began last year and they played their first league games this season.

In 1995 and 1996, the 1st team won the Slough Town Cup and finished runners-up. In those years, we finished in respectable positions in the Chiltonian Premier Division and latterly the East Berks League. We are now focusing on the Reading League as a route with the right progression to a higher standard of football.  In their first season the first team won the Berkshire Intermediate Cup and narrowly lost in the same final in 2006, as did the reserves i the Junior Cup.
